Acupuncture is a therapeutic method used to encourage natural healing and improve the overall function of the body.  Lake Norman Health & Wellness is proud to announce that we are now offering acupuncture as one of our therapies by Dr. Dan Boggs.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Much like the human body has a nervous system, cardiovascular system and digestive system that regulate and control its function, the body also has an energy system that helps to control and regulate it’s function.  This energy flows through pathways called “meridians”.  If that energy flow is disrupted, the normal function of the body will be disrupted, and this will eventually lead to a state of “dis-sease”.  Acupuncture is utilized to stimulate points along these meridians to encourage normal energy flow through the meridians so that the body’s natural healing mechanisms can go to work.

Are Needles Always Used?

No.  Needles are only one way to stimulate an acupuncture point.  Dr. Boggs also uses laser, microcurrent stimulation, and non invasive instruments like gua sha and teishein instruments for treatment.  He will tailor a treatment program that will best suit your needs and comfort levels.

What Conditions Can Acupuncture Help?

Since acupuncture is used to help support the body’s natural healing mechanisms, most any condition can benefit from acupuncture.  Specifically, the World Health Organization has found acupuncture to be effective with the following conditions:

  • Acute and chronic pain
  • Trigeminal neuralgia
  • Neck pain and shoulder pain
  • Post-op discomfort
  • Allergies
  • Blood pressure
  • Anxiety
  • Infertility
  • Migraine headaches, tension and sinus headaches
  • Bladder Dysfunction
  • Back pain
  • Digestive problems
  • Skin problems
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Sexual Dysfunction
  • Bed wetting
  • Asthma
  • Hemorroids
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Various neurological problems

We offer four specialized services of Acupuncture in our office, all provided by Dr. Dan Boggs:

  1. Traditional needle acupuncture.  Traditionally, needles stimulate specific points on the body, called acupoints, to help bring the body back to it’s proper function.  In addition to needles, Dr. Boggs als uses less invasive forms of acupoint stimulation such as laser, teishin, microcurrent stimulation and manual pressure.  Because one of the goals of acupuncture is to normalize bodily function, it is helpful for most any condition.
  2. Auriculotherapy.  This is needle-less stimulation of the external ear used for alleviating pain and dysfunction in other parts of the body.  Treatment is normally performed with laser, manual pressure, magnets, pellets, and microcurrent stimulation.
  3. Cupping.  Suction cups of varying sizes are attached to the body.  The suction draws stagnant blood to the surface of the skin and improves blood circulation through the tissues, which can speed healing.  Cupping is effective in healing injuried, alleviating pain and dysfunction, and increasing athletic performance.
  4. Gua Sha.  This traditional Chinese medical treatment allows the skin to be scraped with an instrument, which produces light bruising called patechiae.  This treatment releases unhealthy elements and toxins from the injured areas and stimulates blood flow and healing.  Gua Sha has been shown to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and assist in healing.  It has traditionally been used for everything from pain to migraines to infection and fever.
